What Happened to Lucy After Edgerunners? Did She Die in the End? An Analysis Based on the TRPG and the Wuthering Waves Collab [Cyberpunk: Edgerunners]

An overwhelming sense of loss.

On YouTube, one comment under “I Really Want to Stay At Your House,” the insert song that defines Lucy’s character, has racked up more than 150,000 likes:

Not even the Trauma Team can save any of us from the feels

Plenty of people who watched Season 1 of the Netflix original anime Cyberpunk: Edgerunners all the way through have felt the weight of Lucy and David’s relationship, their attachment to each of them, and that lingering sense of loss.

In this article, we’ll take a deep dive into what became of Lucy after the anime, drawing on the main game, the related TRPG, and other official material.

※Warning: This article contains major spoilers for the anime Cyberpunk: Edgerunners.

The Final Scene: Lucy Heads to the Moon

The final episode of Cyberpunk: Edgerunners (Episode 10, “My Moon My Man”) ends with Lucy standing alone on the surface of the moon. In the battle at Arasaka Tower, David is defeated by Adam Smasher and killed, while Lucy escapes Night City with Falco’s help.

Going to the moon was Lucy’s dream from the start, and David promised that he would take her there someday. By the end of the story she does make it to the moon, but David isn’t by her side.

As Lucy walks across the lunar surface in her spacesuit, a phantom of David appears beside her. It’s a quiet way of driving home that the dream was fulfilled not by the two of them together, but by her alone.

Lucy is alive in this final scene, and her death is never depicted within the anime itself.

The show never tells us how she lived after reaching the moon or whether she ever returned to Night City. It simply rolls into the ending and closes. That heartbreaking finale, where the loss of someone precious outweighs the joy of a dream come true, is what made the series so beloved. It’s also why speculation about “what happened to Lucy” has never stopped.

Falco’s Mention of Lucy in the TRPG

The Cyberpunk: Edgerunners Mission Kit, a starter box set for the TRPG that lets players experience the world of Edgerunners, was released in Japan by Hobby Japan on January 30, 2025. A Reddit user who read the guide PDF pointed out that it contains a passage where Falco acknowledges that Lucy left for the moon and never came back.

In other words, after heading to the moon at the end of the anime, Lucy never returned to Night City.

At that point, though, many questions still remained about what happened after the final scene:

  • How did Lucy spend her time on the moon?
  • Did she really never return to Night City?
  • Did she die on the moon, possibly by her own hand?

These were still open questions as of January 30, 2025.

The Lucy Death Theory and the Memorial in Cyberpunk 2077

Let’s look back at the inscription on David’s memorial in the main game. These words, engraved on David’s grave, are one of the few places in the game where you can sense Lucy’s presence.

You didn’t take me to the moon, but you were there with me.

It’s heartbreaking.

The memorial conveys Lucy’s desperate wish: she truly wanted David to take her to the moon, and she wanted to go there together, alive.

However, this memorial sparked two theories among fans:

  1. After heading to the moon at the end of the anime, Lucy came back to Night City.
  2. Lucy followed David, who died in the final episode, and took her own life.

But the inscription most likely means something else: “We never made it to the moon together, but back then (presumably when we went to the moon together through a braindance), you were there with me.” It reads as a message of love for David, looking back on a precious memory from that braindance.

▼The conversation between Lucy and David at the end of Episode 2, during their braindance on the moon:

Lucy: “It’s my first time doing this with someone.”
David: “Oh… wait, why’d you show me this?”
Lucy: “Dunno… I guess I figured it was okay to show you.”

Lucy had run from a painful past and lived alone her whole life. For her, that moment was the first time she ever felt she could open her heart to someone. The words on the memorial were likely the last thing she left behind in Night City, written while thinking back on that precious time with David.

Before the Final Analysis: Lucy’s Past

Let’s also summarize Lucy’s backstory.

Lucy’s father was Takeshi Kushinada, an elite Arasaka veteran of the Fourth Corporate War. Her mother was Shimmer, a runner from the Polish underground.

Lucy was deeply loved by her father, but their relationship changed when she discovered records of the brutal atrocities he had committed during the war. Shocked by what she learned, she resolved to defy him at the age of seven.

Meanwhile, because Lucy had the potential to become the best netrunner in the world, her father sent her to Arasaka’s black-ops netrunning team. In a dark underground facility, she was forced to deep-dive into the dangerous Old Net. One child after another failed to return from the Old Net and died, and Lucy eventually killed the adults and escaped the Arasaka facility.

After fleeing Arasaka, Lucy decided to keep running until she had saved enough money to escape her family and Arasaka forever. She drifted from state to state, taking small jobs and honing her skills, until she finally met Kiwi. She then settled in Night City, which conveniently doubled as a place to hide.

Lucy’s True Ending, Revealed in the Wuthering Waves × Cyberpunk: Edgerunners Collab

What finally settled the question of Lucy’s true ending was the Wuthering Waves × Cyberpunk: Edgerunners collaboration, officially released on June 8, 2026.

If you’ve watched Season 1 of the anime but haven’t seen this collab yet, I strongly recommend watching it, even through a playthrough video. It is, for all intents and purposes, Episode 11 of Cyberpunk: Edgerunners Season 1. That’s no exaggeration: the collab is an epilogue told through a game.

Bartosz Sztybor, an official writer at CD PROJEKT RED, the developer of Cyberpunk, was closely involved in the collab, working with the Wuthering Waves team to faithfully recreate the world of Edgerunners in the game. (Seriously, thank you.)

(The collab recreates several of Lucy and David’s scenes from the anime, and it hit incredibly hard emotionally.)

I’ll skip the details of the collab’s story, but before David fades away, Lucy tells him:

“I got my own room on the moon. It’s not big, but I like it.”

After reaching the moon, Lucy had a room of her own. She kept on living there.

The collab also includes a scene where Lucy talks with Misty, a character from 2077. Lucy, who once said she couldn’t sleep well, seems to have finally eased a little of her past trauma, and the story ends on a hopeful note.

Until now, there were basically no traces of Lucy in the main game. The apartment Lucy and David shared in Night City can’t be seen from the inside, and there were almost no clues about what happened to her afterward.

With this Wuthering Waves collab, however, we finally have an official answer:

Lucy was able to live quietly on the moon, safe from the corpos and everyone else.

After the anime’s finale, Lucy was likely being treated as something close to a fugitive by Arasaka. She escaped that dangerous life in Night City, and on the moon, the dream she and David shared, she most likely lived out the rest of her days.

Four years after the anime premiered in 2022, I feel like I’ve finally witnessed Lucy’s true ending, and at last my heart feels just a little lighter.

Lucy and David: Their Dreams

In Cyberpunk: Edgerunners, the word “dream” is a key theme.

David’s mother, Gloria, hoped he would use his talents to climb to the top floor of Arasaka Tower so he would never have to struggle for money. Maine entrusted David with his own unfulfilled dream of becoming a Night City legend.

David inherited Gloria’s yellow jacket and Maine’s arm launcher as keepsakes, and with them, he took on their dreams.

But although he fulfilled those dreams in the final episode, David’s ultimate dream had become the promise he made to the woman he loved: to take Lucy to the moon.

▼The conversation between Lucy and David in Episode 7, as they look out over Night City from afar:

Lucy: “Your hand…”
David: “It’s fine, it’ll settle down soon.”
Lucy: “You haven’t changed. You’re still living with other people’s dreams on your back.”
David: “…”
Lucy: “I get how you feel, but… I don’t think I’m scared for myself anymore. What scares me now is that you…”

For Lucy, the dream of going to the moon was really a longing for a place where she belonged. She dreamed of a faraway land billed as paradise. But after meeting David, the place she belonged was no longer the moon. It was David himself.

Lucy despaired of “other people’s dreams” (the dreams set for her by her parents and the adults around her) and ran away, and going to the moon became her dream. In the end, though, her only dream became having David by her side.

David, too, who had carried “other people’s dreams” all along, ended up with only one dream: to take Lucy to the moon.

And through his own death, David fulfilled that dream of taking Lucy to the moon, never realizing that her dream was no longer to go to the moon, but to have him by her side.

“Sorry. Wish we could go to the moon together”

These were David’s last words to Lucy in the anime. But the last words he spoke at the end of “Episode 11” (the Wuthering Waves collab) were:

“Thanks, Lucy.”

Lucy made David’s final wish, to take her to the moon, come true. It looked as though David had fulfilled Lucy’s dream, but perhaps those words were his thanks to Lucy for fulfilling the first and last dream that was truly his own, a man who had never had a dream of his own.
